We are dedicated to encouraging the use of German in Scotland. As the protection of multilingualism is very important to us, we are happy to join our partners and raise awareness of the benefits of learning second languages. Apart from organising exchanges for Scottish and German university students, we are providing exclusive material for teachers of German in Scotland.
German Educational Trainees (GETs) are students sent by Mainz University to schools across Scotland to support the teaching of German language and culture.
Cross borders, become a global citizen and gain valuable insights into the Scottish education system.
The LPlus programme is an accredited JGU certificate which enables B.Ed/M.Ed students to get across borders and make intercultural experiences. The scheme spans 12 months and blends academic study, practical teaching and critical self-reflection. The scheme is structured into four phases: Students study at a Scottish partner university for one semester (LPlus Study), before teaching as a German language assistant in a Scottish primary school (LPlus Teach) and gaining first-hand insight into a different education system.
Education for global citizenship involves awareness raising, knowledge and activities which aim to equip all participants with the skills and understanding to take responsibility, value diversity and play an active part in European democratic life today.
To this end, the GET Support Team at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz organises Global Outreach (GO) for students enrolled in Scottish, Irish, Latvian and German universities. This consists of projects of two or four weeks (in a team) in Rheinland-Pfalz for students from our partner universities.
JGU Scotland HUB’s ‘Teaching Scotland’ is a virtual community bringing together teachers of English who wish to explore Scotland’s literature and culture in the classroom.
The project is designed to support teachers in Rheinland-Pfalz to integrate global perspectives into their classrooms. It facilitates intercultural education and strengthens the collaboration between Germany and Scotland in education.
As part of the programme we provide a collection of teaching resources for EFL classrooms, designed for teachers and students to explore Scotland’s rich history, culture, and literature as part of their English lessons.

Students of the department of English and Linguistics (B.A./M.A. and B.Ed./M.Ed. courses) can choose from a variety of interesting classes and modules that feature Scotland’s history, culture and literature.
In an effort to decolonise the curriculum, our Cultural Studies lectures no longer just focus on the history of England and the Empire. Our devolved lecture series is unique, not just at JGU but the field of British Studies in Germany.
Modelled on our Survey of British Culture and Literature (CS1 and CS3), this lecture will provide an overview of Scotland’s History, Culture and Literature, starting with questions of identity and a sense of place before embarking on a journey through the ages that will open up vistas into Scotland’s rich cultural heritage and her stories of nationhood.
The aim of Lecture 314 English Literature and Culture: Survey of Scotland’s History, Literature and Culture is to present
- A survey of the history of Scotland
- A survey of the literature of Scotland from the beginnings to the present
- A survey of the most important cultural changes during this (long) time
Additionally, the JGU Scotland HUB organises extracurricular activities and events to teach students more about Scotland’s history and culture. As well as extracurricular events such as guest lectures and research days, students are welcome and encouraged to participate in our cultural events such as Reading Scotland and the annual Scot-t Fest.
