Information

Dear Global Citizens,
applications are open for the 2024 GO Mensch Project! Here is some information about the project:

For JGU students:

Monday, 17 June 2024 — Friday, 21 June 2024: Academic week (JGU Mainz)
Friday, 21 June 2024 — Friday, 28 June 2024: Project work (Ahrtal/excursions in RLP)
Friday, 28 June 2024 — Sunday, 30 June 2024: Scot-t Fest (JGU Mainz)

This year's GO project includes a week of interdisciplinary academic talks at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and a second week of excursions to various places in Rheinland-Pfalz that demonstrate the influences of the "Mensch" on our environment. During this time, you will have the chance to work on creative group projects focussing on the Anthropocene while working together with Scottish, Irish, Latvian, and German students. The project will end with the Scot-t Fest during which you will have the opportunity to showcase your individual group projects.

The project's main language will be English, but you will have chances to speak and thus practice German as well.

For JGU students there is no project fee, but for some excursions you might need to pay an entrance fee. The lectures are free.

We are aware that the summer school takes place during the semester. We will gladly speak to your lecturers or issue an oficial letter if you need to excuse yourself from a seminar or lecture during the project.

English students may have the participation recognized to replace participation in certain courses/modules, if they hand in a written reflexion ("portfolio") about their experiences after the summer school.

If you have any questions about your participation in or application for 2024 GO Mensch, please contact us via scothub@uni-mainz.de

For international students:

Monday, 3 June 2024 - Friday, 14 June 2024: German Language Course (JGU Mainz - optional)

The participation fee is expected to be about 350€ at most. Though we will keep the fee as low as possible, the exact amount is ultimately determined by the number of participants and the resulting costs during our project. The fee covers the language course, lectures at JGU, a cultural programme in Mainz, as well as accommodation and travel during the two weeks of the project.
Please note that travel to and from Mainz as well as accommodation in Mainz during the optional language course is not covered by the project fee and must be organised and paid for by the participants themselves!
Of course, we will support you in finding affordable accommodation. You will receive more information about this in case your application has been successful.
The payment of the project fee will be split into two instalments. The first payment is expected in advance to confirm your participation, while the second one will be due after the completion of the project.

We highly recommend checking with your university's international office for possible funding for your participation in the summer school. For participants from the EU (Ireland and Latvia) this will likely be an Erasmus+ funding (Blended Intensive Programme). In the UK, you will most likely be funded via the Turing Scheme. Please note that the Turing Scheme only funds mobilities longer than four weeks. That means that a participation in the language course is required to receive Turing funding.
