Please join us for our first ever "Scot-t Fest" in Rheinland-Pfalz!
Friday, 7 July 2023 from 1 p.m. and Saturday, 8 July 2023 from 10 a.m.
Scotland is coming to Rheinland-Pfalz. As part of our Summer of Culture, Kultursommer Rheinland-Pfalz, the JGU Scotland HUB is hosting a “Scot-t Fest” in July. Named after Scotland (Scot-) and Sir Walter Scott (Scott-), the Scot-t Fest is a blend of academic and artistic events.
Do join us and our friends from Scotland to celebrate Rheinland-Pfalz’s new partnership with Scotland in Culture, Education and Research.
The academic programme is focused on Nature and Scottish Nature Writing.
Taking Nan Shepherd’s The Living Mountain (published as Der lebende Berg in German) as one of the most celebrated works on nature writing as our lead, we have asked Jenny Sturgeon, singer-songwriter and performer from Shetland, to give us her lyrical, melodic and visual interpretation of this iconic text on wilderness.
We are also delighted that Erlend Clouston agreed to bring his “animated lecture on Nan Shepherd” (first performed in 2020 at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh) to our Scot-t Fest. Nan Shepherd was the first female writer to appear on a British banknote but is still not widely known in Germany.
Public readings and presentations by academics and writers on Scott and Scotland will be on offer too. And you can also learn more about the challenges of Climate Change from our students. This year’s participants from Scotland and Ireland as well as from the JGU Mainz will be sharing their findings from our Global Citizen project “GO Wald” in the Pfälzer Wald.
The Scot-t Fest is a blend of academic and artistic events and a Scottish evening with music and dance is a must. At our two-day Scot-t-land festival you can try out bagpipes or learn some Gaelic, watch a Scottish dancing performance and join the dancers or you can participate in Lowland Games, if you are a wee lad or lassie.
The Scot t Fest is open to everyone, young or old, with kilt or without.
So do mark the event in your diary and please join us for our first ever “Scot-t Fest” in Rheinland-Pfalz. Register for the event for free via Eventbrite
Looking forward to seeing you!
The JGU Scotland HUB team.
