This year´s GO project includes a week of interdisciplinary academic talks about the connection between “Heimat” (home), migration and climate change at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and a second week of collaborative project work with students from schools in Ahrweiler. The project will end with the Scot-t Fest during which you will have the opportunity to showcase your individual group projects.
The project´s main language will be English, so all students can apply, whether they know German or not. However, you will have many chances to speak and thus practice your German if you want.
For your participation you can earn 3 ECTS and a Global Citizenship Award!
For international students,
the participation fee is expected to be about 350 € at most. We will keep the fee as low as possible, but the exact amount is ultimately determined by the number of participants and the resulting costs during our project. The fee covers the language course, lectures at JGU, a cultural programme in Mainz and Ahrweiler, as well as accommodation (starting Sunday, 14 June) and travel during the two weeks of the project.
Please note that travel to and from Mainz as well as accommodation in Mainz during the optional language course is not covered by the project fee and must be organised and paid for by the participants themselves!
Of course, we will support you in finding affordable accommodation.
The payment of the project fee will be split into two instalments. The first payment of 100 € is expected in advance to confirm your participation, while the second one will be due after the completion of the project (we will also ask you to get the “Deutschlandticket” for the month of June for unlimited travel with public transport – the cost for this is already calculated into the expected fee).
For JGU/German students,
the participation fee is 45 € and includes lectures at JGU, a cultural programme in Mainz and Ahrweiler, as well travel during the two weeks of the project and accommodation in Ahrweiler.
We highly recommend checking with your university’s international office for possible funding for your participation in the summer school. For participants from the EU (Ireland and Latvia) this will likely be an Erasmus+ funding (Blended Intensive Programme). In the UK, you might be able to get funded via the Turing Scheme.
If you have any questions about your participation in or application for 2026 GO Heimat, please join our optional “GO Heimat Q&A” on Tuesday, 3 February 2026 on MS-Teams

About GO Heimat
The "2026 GO Heimat" project will take place from 14-28 June 2026 and offers students a unique opportunity to engage with a meaningful global topic - this time focusing on "Heimat" (roughly translated as home or homeland).
Heimat is more than just a place - it is about belonging. However, due to climate change, migration, and social transformation, the meaning of Heimat is shifting for communities worldwide. With insights from experts across various disciplines, students will explore how climate change and migration patterns affect people’s sense of home and belonging. Together, we will reflect on personal connections to Heimat, examine how communities adapt, and develop creative ideas to foster resilience and solidarity.
Project Dates:
Monday, 01.06.2026 - Friday, 12.06.2026
Optional German Language Course (free of charge)
Sunday, 14.06.2026 - Sunday, 28.06.2026
"2026 GO Heimat" Project + Scot-t Fest 2026
The application period runs from 19 January 2026 to 16 February 2026.
